The Wine and Cheese Place / Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad Release Party!

The email was sent out for the party invites.  Some got kicked back because we could not read your writing.  So we will call those soon.    Shae is calling everyone now for the the other lottery winners.

We are proud to announce the release date for our Bourbon Barrel Quad!

TWCP/Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Quad Release Party!
Hosted by Dan Kopman, co-founder of Schlafly
Friday February 17th - 6-7pm
We will taste the Bourbon Barrel Quad along with the "regular" Quad.
$10 per person.
Plus you can purchase up to 2 bottles of the Bourbon Barrel Quad...$13.99 / 750ml bottle

We are going to limit the party to 30 people due to the limited amount of bottles produced.

How do you get a ticket to the release party?
We are going to draw the names tomorrow (Feb 10) for the lottery portion of the bottles.   We will contact people in the order they are drawn and we will give them the option of attending the party .  We will go down the list until we hit our limit.
We will draw for the first 100 bottles today (up to 2 bottles per person).  30 people from this drawing will be able to attend the release party if they like.
The other bottles we will offer via our normal online method sometime on Friday before the tasting.  I will post the link as we usually do on limited releases.

Schlafly / The Wine and Cheese Place Bourbon Barrel Quad is BOTTLED!!!!!

When we first put the Schlafly beer in barrel six months ago (check out the pics) , I thought this day would never come....but....
I got "the call"  from Stephen Hale, head brewer of Schlafly, that they bottled the Bourbon Barrel Quadrupel.  That is the good news, the bad news is that the "angel's share" was bigger than we thought.  The barrel only yielded 18 cases of bottled beer after evaporation.   We are going to save a case for for special tastings and ageing. So that leaves only 17 cases to sell or 204 bottles!

We cannot tell you how excited we are about this program and to be involved with local breweries in creating these rare, limited, and exciting beers.   I think it is very exciting for the beer community here in St. Louis and is a result of the close network we have and the amazing brewers and their willingness to participate.   This is just the first one to be bottled with 5 more beers in barrel and more on the way.  Click here to read more about the barrel program and scroll down the blog posts and check out the pictures..

Great looking bottle --

Bourbon Barrel Aged Quadrupel
Available in extremely limited quantity, exclusively at The Wine and Cheese Place.

ABV:
12 | IBU: 50
APPEARANCE: Deep mahogany, slightly hazy
PROCESS: Strong Belgian-style Ale; aged in a Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrel for several months
HOPS: Marynka, Lublin (PL)
MALTS: 2-row malted barley, malted wheat, Munich malt, Special B malt, Caravienne, Dark Candi sugar
YEAST: Belgian Abbey Ale
OG:24.5
SRM:27

Our Quadrupel is easily one of the most rich and full bodied beers we make, so when Paul Hayden at The Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton, Missouri asked us to age some in a bourbon barrel, we were happy to oblige. The resulting ale is loaded with oak and bourbon character, as well as the rich dried-fruit character of the Quadrupel. We have created a unique taste you will only find in this extremely limited edition. We filled just one bourbon barrel and may never produce this beer again, so enjoy!

Hoping I get lucky on this one. How will the remaining bottles be sold?

How do I get put into this drawing?

Thanks.

Sorry, we stopped taking names. We took names through the whole month of January.
Watch for the rest of the bottles to be sold by online reservations on Fri Feb 17 using our usual system.

Can you by through the online system and then pick up at the store? Or is this only for purchase via shipping?

Paul Hayden said...

You can pick up at any of our 4 stores.

Will the 2 bottles alloted to the people invited to the release party be available to purchase in addition to the 2 bottles we are allowed to buy if our name is one of the 100 chosen in the lottery system? A total of 4 bottles in other words if we are so lucky in my scenario.

Confusing. And what is the $10/person for?

Paul Hayden said...

No it will be 2 total per person. I am going to keep the list and avoid duplication when we offer the online portion also.
$10 will be to help cover the cost of samples we will be using at the tasting of the both Quads and some cheese we will have out.

how many names are on the list? If I recall I signed up before January.

Where, and when, did people sign up for this, in the first place? I never knew there was a list out there, and I go into the Forsyth Wine & Cheese place frequently, and never saw a list. So frustrating. And, as for as who got "invited" to attend the party, this post about the party was made just yesterday, so obviously, there was no attempt at all to make this truly open to everyone who frequents the Wine & Cheese place, it's just open to the people who know/knew where the signup sheet was.

If there is going to be a beer event, why not post it and advertise it for all, out in the open (like the classes), and then let people sign up first-come-first-served, like they do for the classes? If the event is essentially full and the beer is already allocated, what was even the point of the post? I would have rather not known, for this just made me MAD.

Paul Hayden said...

Sorry, but you would have found out about the list as you just found this post. It was on the blog, twitter, facebook and in emails. Plus there was a sign on the front door at Forsyth with the information? The release party was not planned until a few days ago when we where sure it would get bottled and when Dan Kopman good be here. There would not be time to do another list and get other names of people that shop here. We just thought this would be the fairest way to go about it. There is still a chance to get the beer on release day.

Can you let us know when you reach the 30 limit for the party and the 100 limit for the bottles? That way we won't be on pins and needles all day!

I don't know why you consider this the fair way to do things. You seem to have more consideration for your online customers than you do your customers who actually walk through your door. I come into your store every week and am getting sick of losing out on the limited release beers to the online warriors who can sit in front of their computers all day waiting to pounce on the beers. Why don't you put the beer on the shelves for a week and then sell online anything leftover. That would be the fair way to do things as far as I am concerned.

Paul Hayden said...

The first 100 bottles were being sold to only those that came into the store. For the month of January people signed up for the lottery to get the beer by coming into the store only.

Paul Hayden said...

We do the online reservation system to be as fair as possible. That gives people that shop at all 4 of our stores they same chance. Otherwise how do you fairly divide up when we have 12 bottles of something? The bottom line is that with hundreds of people looking for the same beers and only 12-24 bottles to go around, people are going to be upset when they do not get one. The system that gets them the beer is the fair way? Then the other guy that got the beer the other method is mad. We do our best is all I can say.

Sorry don't mean to complain. I really like the way you do things in general trying to make it fair for everyone, but I would like to suggest allowing people to only purchase only One bottle instead of Two. I am sure there were well over 100 people who tried to reserve a bottle and allotting 100 bottles to only 50 people is a shame causing many other people miss out. I have been looking forward to this since it was announced and bought a bottle of the bourbon to taste with the quad and it looks like I may miss out now. Just a suggestion for future releases like this.

Sorry I really do not mean to bitch. I really do appreciate how great of a job you do Paul, just wanted to make a suggestion.

Thanks,

MJP

MJP,
I understand your comments and we debated on it. The style of the beer, we know that a lot of people like to try it young and then age the second one. We will consider doing 1 bottle per person on the next one. Also don't forget there is still another 100 bottles that we will have for sale on Feb 17th release day via our online reservation system.
